The Harrison City community is mourning the sudden and unexpected loss of one of its most cherished figures, Janet Whirlow, founder and longtime owner of Janet’s Restaurant. Janet passed away unexpectedly this week, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and community spirit that will not be forgotten.
Known affectionately to many simply as “Miss Janet,” she was more than just a restaurateur—she was a cornerstone of the town. For over three decades, Janet’s Restaurant served not only as a gathering place for friends and families but also as a living reflection of Janet’s values: warmth, hard work, generosity, and good old-fashioned hospitality.
Janet Whirlow was born and raised in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. A proud lifelong resident of the area, she built her life and career right in the heart of Harrison City. Her dream of opening her own restaurant became a reality in the early 1990s when she opened Janet’s Restaurant—first a humble diner with only a few tables and an even smaller kitchen. Over the years, it grew to become a beloved local institution, known far beyond Harrison City for its hearty breakfasts, homemade pies, and, of course, Janet’s warm greeting at the front door.
“She knew every customer by name,” said longtime patron and friend Linda Gates. “Even if you were a stranger walking in for the first time, she made you feel like family. That’s just who she was.”
Janet had an uncanny ability to make everyone feel welcome, whether they were regulars grabbing their morning coffee or families celebrating milestones over chicken pot pie and fresh apple crumble. Her laugh filled the room, and her dedication to her staff and customers was unparalleled.
Beyond the walls of the restaurant, Janet was deeply involved in her community. She was a quiet supporter of local food banks, school fundraisers, and veterans’ causes. Her restaurant often hosted community events, charity pancake breakfasts, and holiday meals for those without a place to go.
Friends and loved ones are stunned by her sudden passing. Although the cause of death has not been publicly confirmed, her loss has sent shockwaves through the small town she helped nourish for so many years—both with her cooking and her kindness.
Janet is survived by her two children, Mark and Eliza Whirlow, and five grandchildren, who were the pride and joy of her life. “Our mom was the strongest woman we’ve ever known,” said Eliza in a statement. “She loved this town, she loved her customers, and she loved us with everything she had.
